Abstract

This research focused on analyzing the relationship between the predisposition towards mathematics and mathematical self-confidence in students of the Calculus I course at the Metropolitan Headquarters of the Latin American University of Science and Technology (ULACIT) during the first quarter of 2024. Likewise, they explored possible differences in these variables according to sex and area of study. The methodological approach adopted was quantitative, descriptive-correlational in nature. The sample was made up of 114 students enrolled in the calculus I course. To analyze the proposed hypotheses, Student's t statistical techniques and Pearson's correlation were used. The results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the levels of predisposition towards mathematics or mathematical self-confidence according to gender or area of study. However, a significant negative correlation was found between both variables: as predisposition towards mathematics increased, self-confidence levels tended to decrease, and vice versa. This finding suggests an inverse relationship between attitudes and perception of ability in this discipline. Furthermore, 77.19% of the students presented very low levels of predisposition towards mathematics, while 81.58% exhibited medium and high levels of mathematical self-confidence, with 47.37% in the high category. These results highlight the disconnection between attitudes towards mathematics and the perception of ability to tackle it.
