Abstract
Violence against religious leaders in Latin America not only threatens individuals and faith communities but also undermines social stability and peace. These leaders, with their social and moral influence, play a crucial role in the design of effective security strategies. The situation requires urgent attention in security studies, given the increase in violence in the region.
Security policies have begun to include citizen participation, encouraging collaboration between authorities, the private sector and civil society. This article explores the often-underestimated contribution of religious leaders and communities in the formulation of security policies. Despite being one of the most vulnerable groups, their experience in dealing with violence is not reflected in their priority inclusion in these strategies. The ambiguity of their inclusion in policies limits the use of their capacities, which represents a disadvantage in the fight against crime.
