Abstract
Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the information found on web pages through GoogleTM search engine on “orthognathic surgery” in Spanish. Methods: three instruments were used: Riordain and McCreary to categorize the content; DISCERN and JAMA to assess quality; Subsequently, descriptive statistics were performed with the Chi square and Kruskal Wallis tests to compare the variables. Results: Of 100 sites consulted, 49 met the inclusion criteria. When evaluating the Specialization, 75% of the websites were dedicated to orthognathic surgery and related treatments. 97.7% of the sites are based on medical facts, and there is almost no evidence of clinical trials in the studied sites (1%). Regarding JAMA, the most absent variables were Attribution (39 pages) and Currency (36 pages). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the affiliation of the web pages and the variables of the instrument (p= 0.111). According to DISCERN, most of the content of the pages studied was regular 41.7% or poor 39.6%, only 18.8% obtained an adequate rating. Furthermore, there was no statistically significant difference between website affiliation and DISCERN content rating (p = 0.337). Conclusions: Patients are exposed to a wide variety of quality information sources with poor or regular content on orthognathic surgery and other health topics.References
