Objective: Mandibular advancement devices are widely used for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea; therefore, it is important to know all the possible side effects they may generate. The objective of this study was to determine the reasons for choosing and recommending patients who attend the services provided by the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Costa Rica, as well as their possible association with some sociodemographic variables.

Methods: A survey was conducted to all patients of the undergraduate and graduate clinics of the Faculty of Dentistry. The sociodemographic variables were (sex, age, educational level, region of origin, clinic where the patient is treated and frequency of visits to the dentist) and related to the selection of the service (reason for choice, dissemination channel to learn about the service, recommendation of the service). Descriptive statistics of the variables and the Chi-square test were performed for bivariate analysis.

Results: 826 patients responded to the survey, 66.7% female and 52.1% between 20 and 39 years old. 99% of participants recommend the service. Recommendation was the main reason for selection (35.2%) and how they learned about the services (66.0%). When comparing the reason for choice with the sociodemographic variables, differences were found only with age (p=0.016). Regarding the dissemination channels, there were differences associated with age (p=0.001), the type of student offering the service (p=0.014) and sex (p=0.017).

Conclusion: Recommendations from family and friends can influence the decision to choose a service, as well as being an efficient channel for disseminating it.
Natalia Gutierrez Marin, Andrea López Soto Copyright (c) 2023 iDental https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://revistas.ulacit.ac.cr/index.php/iDental/article/view/103 Sat, 23 Dec 2023 00:00:00 +0000 TikTok: Source of quality oral cancer information? https://revistas.ulacit.ac.cr/index.php/iDental/article/view/105
A video search was conducted on the social network TikTok using the hashtags "#canceroral", "#canceroral", "#cancerofmouth", "#cancerofmouth", "#cancerbuccal" and "#cancerbuccal". The search was conducted by re-downloading the app on an iPhone 6 with a cleared cache. The first 25 "most relevant" videos on each page were collected, because statistics indicate that most users do not watch those after the third page. Four categories were analyzed: video information, video creator information, format analysis, and content quality. In this article, it was shown that TikTok videos on oral cancer and their success in viralization on the platform will depend on their visual appeal to users, not so much on the quality of the information contained. The predominant type of video was that of a person talking, obtaining a greater number of comments and likes. However, the videos that only presented images were the ones that got the most shares from the population. In Spanish there is no study like the one presented above, which makes it unique in its field and allows for a large collection of information. The information on oral cancer in Spanish on TikTok is very limited. It was determined that most of the information is little or moderately useful, mainly talking about prevention and the manifestations of the pathology, but there is a lot of misinformation regarding the causes, such as prolonged exposure to the sun.

They are characterized by the proliferation of Schwann cells, perineural cells and endoneural fibroblasts. They can be solitary or associated with syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type I and type II. Its appearance in the oral cavity is rare, with the tongue being the most common location. Clinically, they present as papular, nodular and tumorous lesions with a sessile or pedunculated base that vary in size, fibrous consistency, and color similar to the surrounding tissues. Case report: 72-year-old woman with a history of meningioma, presented for consultation to change removable total prostheses, a papular lesion close to the line of vibration was observed at the junction of the hard and soft palate on the right side of the midline, coinciding with the posterior limit of the upper prosthesis, size 10 x 8 mm, color similar to the surrounding tissues, smooth surface, soft on palpation and unknown evolution time, asymptomatic patient. An excisional biopsy was performed and the histopathological study plus immunohistochemistry for S100 confirmed that it was a solitary neurofibroma. The patient’s progress was good, with no recurrence. Conclusions: the importance of considering neurofibroma as a possible diagnosis of papular and tumor lesions on the palate is highlighted. In addition, as in this case, a complete anamnesis, a correct surgical intervention and the anatomopathological study allowed a definitive diagnosis of the lesion.
Luis Suárez Quesada, Yadira Boza Copyright (c) 2023 iDental https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 https://revistas.ulacit.ac.cr/index.php/iDental/article/view/101 Thu, 11 Jan 2024 00:00:00 +0000
